Dr. Makam Ramesh
A Pioneer in Laparoscopic Surgery and the Visionary Behind B.E.S.T InstituteIntroduction: Meeting the Visionary
In the realms of surgical training and laparoscopic surgery in India, one name that stands out is Dr. Makam Ramesh. As the founder of the Bangalore Endoscopic Surgery, Training Institute, and Research Centre (B.E.S.T Institute), he has been instrumental in transforming the landscape of surgical training in India and beyond.
The Early Years: A Quest for Excellence
Born on 11th February 1962 in Bangalore, Karnataka, Dr. Ramesh is an alumnus of Bangalore Medical College. His initial years were marked by a deep quest for medical excellence, which led him to acquire an array of qualifications such as D.N.B., D.A.C.P., F.A.I.S., F.I.A.M.S., F.I.C.S., F.M.A.S., F.I.A.G.E.S., F.A.L.S., and many more.
The Global Expedition: A Journey Across Seven Countries
Before establishing B.E.S.T Institute, Dr. Ramesh embarked on a five-year-long global expedition. He visited over 26 reputed centers across seven countries to acquire unparalleled skills in laparoscopic surgery. This international experience not only honed his surgical skills but also exposed him to diverse techniques and best practices in laparoscopic training.
The Genesis of B.E.S.T Institute: Turning a Dream into Reality
Upon his return to India, Dr. Ramesh founded the B.E.S.T Institute in 1998, with an ambitious aim to democratize advanced surgical care across the country. Located at A.V. Hospital in Basavanagudi, Bangalore, the institute quickly became a cornerstone in laparoscopic surgery training. Dr. Ramesh designed a comprehensive, practically-oriented laparoscopic training course that amalgamated the best practices from various global training centers he had visited.
Expanding the Horizon: Training for All
The courses initially attracted private practitioners and healthcare facility owners, but soon the focus shifted towards training professors at medical colleges. This strategic pivot helped extend the benefits of laparoscopic surgery to underserved communities. To date, the institute has trained more than 2000 medical professionals from all over India and several other countries, including Malaysia, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Dubai, Bahrain, the U.K., Australia, West Indies, Nigeria, and the U.S.A.
Innovations and Affordability: Making Laparoscopic Surgery Accessible
Dr. Ramesh’s commitment to healthcare extends beyond training. He has collaborated with Indian companies to design cost-effective laparoscopic instruments. His innovative ‘Endotrainer’ reduced the cost of training significantly, making laparoscopic training more accessible.
Digital Outreach: A Global Platform for Knowledge Sharing
In 2000, Dr. Ramesh took a significant step towards global outreach by launching the institute’s first website during the World Congress of Endoscopic Surgery in Singapore. This platform served as a universal channel for free knowledge transfer and continues to do so under its new domain, www.bestinstitute.org.in.
